Brittania Mills is a cluster of listed buildings within the Castlefield area of Manchester. The brief was to remodel an existing loft apartment as the original conversion, completed 15 years previously, required a ‘revamp’. The concept was to create a more open series of spaces. The upper mezzanine walls were removed and replaced with acid-etched glass balustrade. To the ground floor, extra (hidden) storage was created and a study designed to meld with the circulation space.

The new apartment layout was slotted between original cast iron columns. A glass box en-suite to mezzanine floor sits prominently as a feature, whilst still maintaining privacy. Douglas fir timber to floor, walls and stair, combines with original red brick walls to create a series of warm, relaxing spaces to facilitate contemporary loft living.
